Boys fall to Lebanon, Newport in soccer

The Huskies lost their league opener in boys soccer 4-1 at home against Newport Monday afternoon.

“We won one half and didn’t win the other half,” Coach Al Grove said. “We weren’t ready to play.”

Newport came out and took advantage of that in the first half, Grove said. “They took a lot of shots and ended up scoring.”

The Huskies turned up the heat in the second half, he said. They were more aggressive and took control of the game and the field.

They took a lot of shots, he said, but scored only one, failing to dig their way out of a four-goal deficit.

The Huskies got a goal about midway through the second half when Brock Cota stole the ball from a Newport player and passed it to Isaiah Blake who put the shot into the net.

Shooting was even between the two sides, Grove said. “Over the game, they had some really good goals.”

The Huskies had “a lot of close ones, but they’re not getting inside,” he said.

On Sept. 29, the Huskies hosted Lebanon, losing 3-0. Lebanon scored all of its goals in the first half in a similar story.

The Huskies played better in the second half, but they weren’t able to score.

“We just need to put together another complete game,” Grove said. “I just don’t think we’re coming out ready to play.”

The Huskies travel to Central on Thursday. Central was ranked number two in the state last week.
