Boys fall to pressure game at Stayton, rebound to beat Taft

Sweet Home 58, Taft 42

The Huskies played a little looser and more aggressively to break a stalemate halftime score and collect a 58-42 victory over Taft Friday night at home in boys basketball.

“I thought Taft did a really nice job switching their defenses,” said Huskies Coach Kostanty Knurowski. The Tigers made their defense difficult to read, making it hard on the Huskies trying to figure out how to attack it and creating confusion.

Taft trailed Sweet Home 13-10 after one quarter. The score was tied at 22 at halftime.

In the second half, “we did a much better job being aggressive,” Knurowski said. The Huskies pulled down more offensive boards.

They would take good shots in the first half, miss and then fail to get the board and follow up, he said. In the second half, they started getting those second chances, boards and foul shots.

“We built a 10-point lead and were able to loosen up,” Knurowski said.

The Huskies led 44-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Stayton 53, Sweet Home 36

Stayton defeated the Huskies 53-36 on Dec. 7 on the road.

“It was a rough night for us,” Knurowski said. The Huskies competed in the first quarter, but by the second, they were buried too deep to recover.

“The second and third quarter, they took us out of what we were trying to do and overwhelmed use with their pressure,” Knurowski said.

“They are very much a veteran group,” he said. Stayton lost no seniors last year, making the Huskies’ lack of experience very evident.

“They continued to fight and battle throughout the entire game,” Knurowski said, and his team had a good fourth quarter.

The Huskies set a goal to win the fourth quarter, Knurowski said. “We were able to do that and salvage some small amount of pride.”
