Boys slam brakes on Crook County in second half

The boys high school soccer team seemed to have a breakthrough as it held off Crook County in the second half of a game on Saturday at home.

The Huskies lost 2-0, with Crook County scoring both in the first half.

“The first half was a little bit slow, but the second half was much better,” said Coach Ryan Regrutto. In the second half, everyone gave maximum effort.

“We missed a penalty kick,” Regrutto said. “We had a lot of chances. We just didn’t score. Finally, I think the kids realized we can compete with these teams.”

Crook County scored its first goal on a penalty 10 minutes into the game, Regrutto said, and the second when the Huskies couldn’t clear the ball off a corner kick.

Crook County had two sloppy goals in the first half, Regrutto said, and the Huskies generally dominated the field.

The team is running on a high note right now, he said, and Regrutto is excited about upcoming matchups.

The Huskies lost to Sisters 7-0 on Oct. 4.

The Huskies were scheduled to play at Cottage Grove Tuesday. Cottage Grove beat them 2-1 previously. Next Tuesday, the Huskies host Elmira.

“Elmira is certainly a winnable game,” Regrutto said. “The next few games we’re really excited about.”

Apart from Sisters, the Huskies can be competitive with any team in the league, he said, and he thinks, if the team can put it together, the Huskies can even compete with Sisters.
