Linn County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who was struck and killed by a train on Monday night, Oct. 27, near the address of 2180 Old Salem Road, Albany.
At about 10:56 p.m. on Oct. 27, the Sheriff’s Office 9-1-1 Dispatch Center received a call from a Georgia Pacific Chemical Division employee reporting a person was walking south on the railroad tracks.
The caller told dispatch the person had been struck by a southbound Amtrak train, according to Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley.
The train was 15 cars in length, which included the engine.
The victim was identified as
Luke James Warner of Brownsville.
Emergency personnel from the Albany Fire Department and Linn County deputies searched the area and located Warner near the railroad tracks at about 11:03 p.m.
Investigators determined that Warner and Bailey Anne Weinberg, 18, of Canby, had run out of gas while traveling on I-5.
They began walking on the railroad tracks towards Albany for gas.
While walking near Georgia Pacific they were confronted by an employee who told them it was not safe as trains travel through that area at a high rate of speed, Riley said.
Moments later Warner was hit by the train. Weinberg was not injured.
Fisher Funeral Home removed Warner from the scene and the investigation is continuing, Riley said.
