Car thief gets 30 months; companion faces more charges

Matthew Everette Wood and James Lee Baker

Matthew Everette Wood of Portland was sentenced July 12 in Linn County Circuit Court to 30 months in prison for second-degree burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Counts of third-degree theft and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle were dismissed as part of plea negotiations.

Wood was one of two arrested June 21 in connection to a burglary and theft of cigarettes from Safeway, 1540 Main St., theft of items from a Linn Shuttle bus and a stolen vehicle.

While on routine patrol, a police officer had observed a passenger in a pickup who matched the description of a person involved in the burglary at Safeway. Wood was driving the pickup, which had been reported stolen 27 minutes earlier.

Police recovered the vehicle and returned it to the owner, arresting James Lee Baker of the Philomath area at the scene and Wood after a search of the area.

Linn County Circuit Court issued a warrant for failure to appear on Baker July 23. Baker had been scheduled for a status check hearing at 1:15 p.m. He is charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle; unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and third-degree theft.

In a separate case, Wood pleaded guilty to a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in an April 4 case in Albany involving a BMW owned by Beaver State Auto Sales. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Twenty months are concurrent with the sentence in the Sweet Home case, and 10 months are consecutive to the sentence in the Sweet Home case.

Since sentencing, Wood was arraigned July 30 on four charges in connection to the June 20 theft of a Jeep Wrangler from a Lebanon address. He is charged with two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, first-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree theft.

He was scheduled to appear for arraignment on Aug. 1.

Linn County Circuit Court issued a warrant against Logan Kenneth White for failure to appear at a resolution conference scheduled for July 25, and Judge Daniel R. Murphy signed an order allowing White’s attorney, Jeffrey M. Jones, permission to withdraw from the case following the failure to appear.

White was arrested on Feb. 12 following a search warrant served by Lebanon Police Department at a private residence at 1011 Pleasant Valley Road on Feb. 9. He was charged with possession of meth, possession of heroin, first-degree theft, second-degree theft and unlawful possession of a destructive device.

In connection to the same case, Heather Rachelle Greenwalt, 36, pleaded guilty March 30 to a count of felon in possession of a firearm March 30 and was sentenced July 23 to 10 months of incarceration with the Oregon Department of Corrections with credit for time served.

She must serve 36 months of post-prison supervision and was fined $200.

And in another case, filed on Nov. 14 and stemming from an incident on Oct. 1, White was charged for delivery of heroin, possession of heroin and unlawful possession of a firearm.

White was scheduled to appear at 8:45 a.m. on July 25 for a final resolution conference in all three cases.

One other person was arrested in connection to the search warrant, including Zachary Mitchell Johnson, who is scheduled for a final resolution conference at 11 a.m. on Aug. 22 in Linn County Circuit Court.
