The Sweet Home High School cheerleaders placed second at state in the 4A large division Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
Brookings Harbor finished with a score of 58.5. The Huskies finished with 55.75 points, followed by Klamath Union at 51, Cottage Grove at 45, Hidden Valley at 44.5 and Madras at 34.25.
“It went really good this year all things considered,” said Coach Amber Rosa. “That was as good as we could expect it to go.”
The Huskies fielded a team with 12 underclassmen, mostly freshmen, Rosa’s a new coach and one of the team’s fliers was injured a week earlier.
The team had a few stunting issues, Rosa said. One stunt went down, while timing was off at another point.
“Everything else was pretty good,” she said. “The dance was really good. We scored really big.”
In comparison to Brookings Harbor, she was impressed with the team’s improvement.
Brookings Harbor beat the Huskies by a lot all year long, she said. “It was their year.”
Brookings Harbor had a good routine and worked hard, she said, and her team was less than three points behind.
The team included juniors Kendra Whaley, Karlie McCubbins, Desiree McCormick, Kellie Pollock and Jordyn Price, who was injured and unable to perform.
It also included sophomores Mariah Morneault and Taylor Thorpe. Thorpe finished third and Morneault finished fifth in the all-state competition.
Freshmen cheerleaders included Peyton Plebuch, Kalyn Hagle, Kaitlyn Watts, Kaelee Almy, Courtney Sanders, Autumn Martin, Felina Rowe, Veronica Szuch and Joleen Smith.
