Crook County drops girls in season opener

Crook County 67,

Sweet Home 27

The high school girls basketball team started out with a quick lead Thursday night on the road, but Crook County turned on a 14-0 run to shut down the Huskies’ offense and win 67-27 to open the basketball season.

“We came out playing really well,” said Coach John Barnes. “We got some easy buckets. I think we were up 8-4, 6-2. We were able to fast break them a little bit. We got some steals and ran.”

That’s when Crook County turned on its big run to close out the quarter.

Crook County outscored the Husky in each quarter, but by the third quarter, the Huskies regrouped and were almost playing evenly with their opponent. Huskies scoring leader Annie Whitfield scored six of her 13 points in the third quarter.

Crook County led 35-14 at halftime and 47-21 at the end of the third quarter.

The Huskies’ lack of height came into play against Crook County, which dominated the offensive boards, Barnes said.

With first-game jitters out of the way, the team was scheduled to face Stayton on the road Tuesday night. It will travel to Taft on Friday and then to North Marion on Tuesday.
