Cross country: No personal bests, but ‘strong’ races from Husky runners

Sweet Home broke in a new runner Saturday at the Springfield Invite, held at Kiwanis Park below Skinner Butte in Eugene.

With numbers far below what the Huskies have had in recent years, every pair of shoes counts, and the addition of senior Kyle Watkins to the lineup boosts their chances to score as a team when it counts, at district.

Although Dakota Seiber was missing in Eugene, the Huskies have the five boys necessary to score as a team.

In a field where all the other competitors were from 6A and 5A schools, Sweet Home’s Jake Sieminski finished 12th in 18:27 on a grassy, soft course that produced times that were slower than some runners were hoping for, said Assistant Coach Cassandra Schumacher, who was in charge Saturday.

“I think it’s kind of a deceiving course,” she said. “I think they think it’s going to be fast, but the grass was kind of chunky.”

Nate Coleman was 18th, in 18:45, Aiden Shamek ran 24:07 and Watkins finished in 25:43.

“I thought everyone ran pretty well, except Dakota wasn’t there and Aiden (Shamek) didn’t have that great a race,” Schumacher said.

“Jacob and Nate ran really strong races – no PR’s, just strong.”

Sweet Home’s only girl on Saturday was Lydia Wright, who finished in 23:15, 23rd in a field of 42.

“Lydia ran a solid race,” Schumacher said.

Next up for Sweet Home is a trip to Black Butte on Thursday, Oct. 14, for the Clash in the Cascades, where the Huskies will see a variety of schools from east of the mountains, along with Oregon West Conference foes Philomath and Stayton, and host Sisters.
