Dr. Carl Edward Speck, 47, of Palm Springs, Calif., died on Jan. 26, 2007 at his home.
He was born in DeQueen, Ariz., on June 14, 1959. His family moved to Oregon in 1963. He attended school in Sweet Home and graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1977.
He pursued his higher education at the University of Hawaii, San Diego State University and the University of Washington where he earned his Ph.D.
After his schooling, he worked as a senior investigator at Southern California Permanente Medical Group in Pasadena, Calif. He oversaw all HIV-related epidemiological research for the Kaiser Permanente Southern California region. He wrote and co-wrote several publications.
After retiring to Palm Springs, he volunteered his time helping found Desert Legal Aid and working with Inland Empire HIV Planning Council.
His parents, Frank and Louise Speck of Sweet Home and Barbara and Bob Mickey of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., survive him; siblings, Eugene Speck of Springfield, William Foley of Rock Springs, Wyo., Kaci Speck of Sweet Home, Robert Mickey of Gresham, Cathy Day of Idaho, Shelly Nolan of Myrtle Creek, Shareen Thompson of Roseburg, Paul Patton of Sisters, Lee Ann Patton of Washington state, Angie Lockman of Newport; and grandmother, Georgia L. Ginnis of Winston.
His youngest brother, Frank “Frankie” Speck, preceded him in death.
A celebration of Mr. Speck’s life was held in Palm Springs for his friends and colleagues. A private burial took place in Longview, Wash.
Friends and family are invited to a local celebration of his life from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on April 1 at the Sweet Home Senior Center.
