Early rainfall brings early end to burning ban

The ban on backyard debris burning in Linn County was lifted Tuesday, Oct. 1, due to the above-average rainfall that fell in September.

The ban, aimed at reducing the incidence of open debris burns escaping control, had been in place since June 16.

Chad Calderwood with Oregon Department of Forestry’s South Cascade District advised residents planning to burn yard debris to contact their local fire department for burning information.

“Even though fire danger has lessened due to a series of wet weather systems impacting the counties, we urge everyone to use safe burning practices,” he said.

This year, the end of the debris burning ban coincides with the lifting of an Oregon Department of Environmental Quality burn ban within and adjacent to communities to protect air quality. Wildfire danger often persists into October, and the ODF debris burning ban, which applies to forest and rangeland outside of cities, in many years has been kept in place after the DEQ ban was lifted.
