June 5, 1917 – Aug. 11, 2006
Emma Lura Johnson, 89, of Sweet Home died Aug. 11, 2006.
She was born June 5, 1917 to David and Evelyn Johnson in Los Angeles. Later, her family moved to Texas and then to Portland in 1926, where she graduated from Washington High School in 1934. She worked at Kress Dime Store and married John Johnson in 1940 in Stevenson, Wash.
The Johnsons made their first home in Vancouver, Wash., where Mrs. Johnson was a housewife and mother while her husband worked in the Vancouver Ship Yards. She survived the Depression/war years and saved everything.
In 1947 the Johnsons built a new house in Molalla, where Mrs. Johnson worked in the strawberry and bean fields as “field boss.” In 1958 the family moved to Lebanon and then, in 1959, to Sweet Home. They opened and operated Ace Home Supply until retiring in 1979. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed the customers and took over the paint and wallpaper department and created a craft corner.
Mrs. Johnson was active in the BPOE Elkettes and enjoyed all activities, including craft and baked sales. She enjoyed picking flowers, mushrooms, pine cones and wild berries. She spent much of her time driving around with her husband enjoying the local scenery. After retiring, she traveled extensively across the United States and Canada with her husband. Their biggest enjoyment was the fishing, hunting and camping excursions. They were always in competition with each other as to who caught the biggest or most fish.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Raymond Johnson of Wamic, Ore.; daughter, Beverly Crocker of Sweet Home; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Morgan Johnson in March of this year; and her sister, Pauline Bellamy, in 1993.
