Former Sweet Home Police Office Randy Gill was sentenced to two days in jail and 18 months of probation on Nov. 20 in Linn County Circuit Court after pleading no contest to second-degree theft and official misconduct, both misdemeanors.
He must pay $514 in fines and fees and forfeit his Department of Public Safety Standards and Training certification, which is required to work as a police officer in the state of Oregon.
Gill, a seven-year veteran of the Sweet Home Police Department, was arrested in Klamath Falls in August following an Albany Police Department investigation.
In October 2011, Sweet Home police officers contacted Police Chief Bob Burford regarding possible misappropriation of funds from December 2010 to October 2011 involving Gill, who was the president of the local AFSCME union chapter, which represents police officers and dispatchers.
The funds have been paid back.
SHPD turned the case over to the Albany Police Department for investigation.
Later the same day, Gill resigned from the department.
