Three local elementary school artists have been selected winners in the annual fire prevention poster contest.
The grand prize posters were created by Maddy Reynolds of Molly Tenbusch’s class at Hawthorne School, Justin Maynard of Carla Alexander’s class at Hawthorne, and Trevor Bruner of Cynthia Davis’ class at Oak Heights.
This is the contest’s 35th year. A total of 120 students participated this year, mostly fourth-graders but with some third- and fifth-graders from mixed classes. The contest was run by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.
The posters submitted were displayed at the Sweet Home Library. The three winning entries were painted onto sheets of plywood by high school art students Hailey Brown, Ashley Farthing, Korrin Matney, Rhiannon Stiles, Abby Stone and Haley Trew.
Justin’s poster will be placed at Shea Point on Highway 20, across from The Point restaurant, Maddy’s poster will be placed at Sunnyside Park on Quartzville Road and Trevor’s will be on Upper Calapooia Drive.
Other place-winners were: Rylee Markell, Olivia Gilmore and Audrey Woodham of Michelle Quest’s class at Foster; Bryte Speights, Hannah Wible and Nathan Aker of Rachel Markell’s class at Foster; Zianna Duncan, Karlee Curtis and David Steagall of Mindie Medina’s class at Oak Heights; Jessica Driver and Bryson McCorkle of Davis’ class at Oak Heights; Riley Gaskey and Mia Matney of Alexander’s class at Hawthorne; and Kallie Maas and Chanel Beckler of Tenbusch’s class at Hawthorne.
In addition to having their posters on display throughout fire season, the three will also be eligible to ride on the Oregon Department of Forestry/U.S. Forest Service float in the Sportsman’s Holiday Parade.
