Construction will begin next week on a Dairy Queen building at M Street across from the Bank of Sweet Home. The proprietors, L. C. Thomas and E. L. Greig, also operates a Dairy Queen in Lebanon.

 

An open invitation is out to any potential marble shooting champion of eastern Linn County to participate in the annual grammar school marble tournament at Oak Heights, sponsored by the VFW. Schools should hold playoffs to determine which students will go on to the championship for a chance to move on to the state championship where they could win a bike and trip to the national championship.

 

Five fires this week were reported. Shingles caught fire on Leslie Beck’s house caused by a chimney spark. A cleaning machine at Sweet Home Cleaners caught fire. Amos Emery’s 1939 model sedan got considerable damage when defective wiring set fire to the car’s interior. Sparks from a chimney set fire to Lloyd Kessell’s home on Holley Road. A flue fire dumped sparks on the shingle roof at 1747 L St.

About 400 kids attended the Sweet Home Jaycee Easter egg hunt at Sankey Park, coordinated for the fifth year running by Jaycee Al Severson. Many of the kids showed up more than an hour early, but the Jaycees reported everything ran smoothly. As many as 1,440 eggs, colored by the Brownies of the Sweet Home Girl Scouts, were divided into four age groups, and included golden eggs to be redeemed for toys. Golden egg finders were: (age group 1-3 years old) Tracy Wells, Mark Johnson, Shelly Comtois; (4-6) Nicky Agoff, Terry Sallee, Tyler Sims; (7-9) Patrick Patterson, David Carson, David Reynolds; (10-12) Jim Namitz, Earl Yardley, Bryan Loftan.

 

A $300,000, two-year project improving the quality of toll telephone facilities between Lebanon and Sweet Home, and allowing for additional toll channels, is now complete. The new microwave system replaced the toll cable route and existing microwave facilities which restricted further growth. The previous system was at full capacity; the new system allows for 120 talk paths between the cities.

 

April 25, 2001

 

Ralph Erlandson recently received a draft of the final report from the National Transportation Safety Board regarding the EgyptAir Flight 990 crash in 1999. Erlandson’s daughter and son-in-law, Dorene and Dale Beck, were killed on that flight. The report indicates the plane was likely driven into the ocean by the co-pilot in an apparent suicide.

 

The Sweet Home Community Foundation kicked off its grant program with a $500 check toward the purchase of ground cover and flowers for Main Street’s meridian.

 

Mabes Canyon, a yearling red Angus bull bred and raised by Byron and Doris Mabee, was high-selling red Angus bull at the Midland bull test and sale in Montana. Mabes Canyon sold for $20,000. The Mabees have been raising the cattle in Holley for 18 years.
