Ringing up groceries for the last time is Alice Rice. The friendly smile and deep voice have been a part of the Safeway checkout counter for the past 14 years before Rice’s recent retirement in 1974.

Aug. 8, 1974

 

Bob Waibel took first place in “The World’s First Loggers Pentathlon” held in Brownsville. Waibel, who coordinated the event, was timed at 1:35.5 minutes in the five events – log shop, axe throw, choker setting, obstacle pole and hand bucking. Two hours of jackpot axe throwing, in which spectators participated, climaxed the show which was viewed by those attending the Sweet Home Elks picnic and others in Brownsville Pioneer Park.

 

From police logs – Two runaway boys from Madras, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody, and two cars they admitted stealing were recovered from Marks Ridge Road. One car was taken from Madras while the other was taken from Sweet Home’s Safeway parking lot, which was a 1955 Chevrolet owned by Charles and Leroy Reynolds.

Tim Carr, 14, suffered a leg sprain and contusions when his dirt bike was struck by a car on Holley Road. Carr was crossing the road when Audra Lane Parent accidentally struck him, ultimately dragging the boy on his bike several feet.

 

The bed racing team of the Sugar Town Citizens Band Radio Club placed fourth in their first competition ever when they competed against 15 other teams in the Eugene CB break. The team, composed of Bonnie Windom, Joyce Rinehart, Alan Hoffman and Neil Smith, is challenging other CB teams to race during Sportsman’s Holiday. They are the fourth CB club in the northwest to have its own racing bed for competition.

 

Aug. 11, 1999

 

The Planning Commission approved, with conditions, a subdivision north of Highway 20 between 47th and 49th avenues for Mid-Valley Holdings and property owner Jenny DeRueda. The property is situated to the south of Nandina Street, which it abuts. The applicant requested an 18-lot subdivision to include seven single family lots, seven duplex lots and four multi-family lots. Those opposed to the proposal referred to drainage problems the neighborhood is currently facing.

 

Construction on Camp Attitude is in full swing and puts the campground for disabled children roughly a year out from opening and joining the dozen fully accessible campgrounds in the nation. Last month the conditional use permit was cleared and workers have since been busy. Projects nearing completion include a clubhouse, restoration of an existing house, decking, the pad for an activity center has been poured, and the first of six cabins is underway.

 

School bus drivers came home with two trophies after competing in a statewide bus driving contest. Judy McKenzie placed first in the mini bus category and Terrie Miller earned a second place trophy in the novice (less than one year) category.
