The Oregon Consumer League is making landlord/tenant law a priority as they try to base law on a model by the Uniform Code Commissioners. When a product such as a car or radio is bought, there is an implied warranty that the product is fit for use.

But if you rent an apartment, there’s no Oregon law requiring the premises be fit to live in. If you complain to the Health Dept. about unfit conditions, you can be evicted. The Landlord and Tenant bill would provide some new rights for the tenant.

The State Dept. of Education advised against the Sweet Home School District serving as its own contractor in the renovation and enlarging of the high school. The board has not yet made a decision on the matter, but is considering to serve as its own contractor in order to save money.

The State advised District 55 will be setting a new first in the state if it chooses to act as its own contractor on such a large project.

Other districts that acted as contractors on small scale projects were dismayed by the work and vowed never to do it again, School Building and Construction Coordinator James A. McCartan said.

Jeremy R. Miller, 23, formerly of Sweet Home, was charged in connection with an attempted theft of a pickup in Lebanon. The owner of the pickup heard the sound of an engine in his driveway and went out to investigate. He saw Miller with his pickup and confronted him.

The victim ran to his pickup and opened the driver door at which point Miller allegedly began striking him with his fists and threatening to kill him. Miller attempted to drive away, dragging the victim with him about 50 feet. The truck veered off a small bridge and got stuck, so Miller fled the scene.
