For the second time in three years, Pete Porter, sports editor of The New Era, was selected by balloting coaches of the Oregon High School Activities Assn. (OSAA) as Oregon’s 1984 Swimming Sportswriter of the Year last Saturday at the Class AAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.
Porter also won the award in 1982, and tied for first place in 1983.
“I’d like to thank all the coaches that voted for me,” Porter said. “but I think a good share of the honor whould truthfully go to Sonia and Dave Cooper, owners of the newspaper, for allowing so much space for local sports coverage.”
Porter said it also helps “to be able to write about winners.”
Sweet Home Swim Coach Doug Peargin was enthusiastic about Porter’s award. “Pete just does a heck of a job, and it doesn’t matter what sport it is.”
“He was up against some pretty good newspapers,” Peargin said. “and he deserved to win. As far as I’m concerned he’s always been at the top.”
With a new leader, the Sweet Home high School Flag Corps is looking forward to the state high school flag competition March 3 at Oregon City where 21 of the best teams in Oregon will compete.
“I think girls have done a great job since they only had one veteran returning.” said new leader Patti Harford, a full time student at Oregon State University.
She was a member of the flag team her junior and senior years at SHHS after coming to Oregon from Arizona.
SHHS band director William Fisher appreciates Harford’s leadership and the enthusiasm displayed by the flag corps.
Although the group is small at present, future growth is expected.
