From Our Files: The New Era stories from 50 and 25 years ago

April 9, 1959

The Sweet Home city library will hold an open house from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in observance of National Library week.

The library, which has been in its present location for five years, is open from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Besides books on all phases of living, both fiction and non-fiction, the library offers seven sets of reference books and an assortment of magazines. New books are added each month.

April 11, 1984

Last Saturday’s rain didn’t bother the Sweet Home High School Huskiettes €“ they brought their parasols. Peforming to the music of “Kiss Me in the Rain,” the Carol Canfield-coached Huskiettes won the 1984 Oregon Dance and Drill Class AA championship at the Salem Armory before a packed house.

In the Class AA division, Sweet Home was followed by Stayton and LaSalle high schools, in the field of 29 school entries.

Sixteen seniors have been chosen by a 10-member panel to rule over the 1984 Sweet Home High School May Day sctivities, according to Student Affairs Director Rob Younger.

“Any senior boy or girl with a 2.0 or above GPA was eligible for application to the May Day Court.” Younger said. “We had about 50 boys and girls show interest and apply.”

The 1984 May Court was announced last week at Sweet Home High School. Princesses are Lori Dunmyer, Susan Wooley, Sheri Jordan, Darlaine Hoggatt, Lexie Harlan, Shelly Weld, Nancy Hillburn and Kathleen Keesecker.

Escorts are Chris Gillispie, Eric Vermillion, Monte Riggs, Richard Dysinger, Dean Nicholson, Mike Black, Rod Smith and Mark Mulholland.
