Girl donates second lock in two years;

Sean C. Morgan

Timberlee Goodwin, 7, donated her second ponytail to Locks of Love last week.

She was joined by her sister, Amanda, 12, who gave her first ponytail.

Cindy Hoover of Hairway 20 cut the girls’ hair.

Two years ago, Timberlee donated her first ponytail, about 12 inches long. Her ponytail was 13 to 14 inches long this year.

“She hates her hair long,” her mother, Shannon Goodwin said. “She grows it to donate it. The minute it’s long enough, she gets it cut off.”

Amanda likes her hair long, but she also thinks it’s “sweet” to donate hair to someone who needs it.

“She thought it was so cool when her sister did it, she wanted to do it too,” Hoover said.

Locks of Love takes hair donations to make wigs for little children who have cancer and lost their own hair.

The organization can use locks of 10 inches or more. For those with shorter hair, Locks of Love can sell the hair to wig companies and use the funds for its own wigs.

Hoover has been sending hair donations to Locks of Love for about eight years. She just sent the last batch of hair, about 20, out recently. It takes her about a year to collect enough to send.

“I just get a box,” Hoover said. “When I get a ponytail long enough, I ask (the client). When it’s full, I send it.”

A friend had told Mrs. Goodwin about how her daughter had given her hair to Locks of Love, and Mrs. Goodwind decided that’s what they would do with Timberlee’s hair.
