Girls basketball faces tough loss, bounces back with win over Newport

he Sweet Home girls basketball team took on North Marion at home on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in what proved to be a challenging game.

The Huskies fell 46-30, but showed considerable resilience, particularly as they battled through illness and injuries.

“We left it all out on the floor on Tuesday,” Coach Erika Evans said. “We’ve been battling some crazy illness, injuries and the like, and the girls have been pushing through it like champs.”

Despite facing a strong North Marion team with five seniors on its varsity roster, Sweet Home had some bright moments. Evans noted that the Huskies’ field goal percentage was actually higher than North Marion’s and above their season average.

“The turnovers and the incredibly uneven foul count got the best of us,” Evans said. “But we  competed well with them, especially considering North Marion is a solid program.”

While the scoreboard may not have reflected it, the Huskies showed growth in key areas, and their determination to keep pushing through adversity was evident. The team is still in development, with no seniors on the varsity roster and only three juniors. This game, however, provided invaluable experience as they face some of the top teams in the state.

The Huskies bounced back quickly with a 46-40 win over Newport on Friday, Feb. 7. The victory was a significant achievement, especially after a tough loss earlier in the week.

Sweet Home faces its final game of the season, hosting No. 4-ranked Cascade at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25.
