Girls dominate La Pine, lose to Sisters in soccer

The girls high school soccer team dominated La Pine on the road Friday afternoon, winning 5-1.

The Huskies were even shorthanded, with Meghan O’Donnell injured, said Coach Ramiro Santana. He made some adjustments, sending Jasmin Yoder to defense. “It looks like it worked out pretty good. We had good passing, quick passing. The girls did a good job passing the pall, they were communicating. It was one of those where the girls felt like the dominated the game.”

The girls felt good about the game and comfortable about facing La Pine, he said. La Pine’s girls were big, but the Huskies were faster, giving them the edge in the game.

The Huskies took 21 shots on goal compared to six by La Pine.

Katie Virtue scored the first goal seven minutes in on a pass from Jessika Stewart from the left. Virtue used her speed to beat the defense.

Rachel Jones scored in the minute 19, taking the ball by the defense down the middle and over the goalkeeper’s head. Four minutes later she scored another goal off a pass from the left by Virtue.

The Huskies switched things up in the second half, moving both goalkeepers, Kristen Tolle and Sabrina Davis to forward along with defender Megan Rubidoux. Haley Kent went to goal.

Ten minutes into the half, La Pine scored on a corner kick to the middle of the field. Hannah Weiber knocked the ball in.

Rubidoux ended up scoring another goal 20 minutes into the half on a pass from Tolle. She took a shot from outside the goal area in center field. Fifteen minutes later she took out a couple of defenders and took a shot into the corner of the goal.

The junior varsity won 4-2.

The Huskies lost 4-0 at home against Sisters on Oct. 4.

“We played them pretty good until the second half,” Santana said.

Sisters didn’t score until the minute 40, he said. From there on, the Huskies struggled.

Sisters scored again on a penalty for a handball by Christina Ulmer. Another went over Davis’ head in goal and the last was a corner kick that flew up and got knocked in on the ground.

The JV lost 10-0.

The Huskies were scheduled to play Cottage Grove at home on Tuesday and then travel to Elmira next Tuesday.

“Tomorrow will be a rough game,” Santana said Monday. “It will be tough. We will play tough. I expect good things.”
