Girls drop Elmira, lose to JC

The Huskies lost to Junction City 5-2 on the road Thursday after defeating Elmira 4-0 on Sept. 27.

The Huskies led 2-1 at halftime against Junction City, but Junction City rallied in the second half and scored four goals to get the win.

“The first half, we played pretty competitively,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. “The first 20 minutes, we were right on them.”

Shaylee Miner scored the first of three goals on the game in the minute 10, Santana said. “We can match that team. The girls put their heads together and it was the minute 20 Jessika Stewart took it in with the left foot and scored.”

The Huskies played a defensive game to hold off Junction City’s response, but they started losing players to injuries. Rylee Links went out first, replaced by Haley Kent. Rosanna Sullivan went in for Christina Ulmer and got hurt. Ulmer went back in. Hanna Curry went in and had to come out. Eventually, the bench had four or five girls sitting and no one available to play.

But Katie Virtue scored at the end of the half, taking the ball straight up the middle with her speed to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, Junction City scored off a corner kick after about 11 minutes, followed by two goals from Miner, one a penalty kick.

Junction City made the final shot of the game into the right corner of the goal, Santana said.

The girls didn’t have the same trouble with Elmira.

“The girls had a decent game, more passing and had their shots,” Santana said. The first goal was in by the minute nine when Rachel Jones took a strong left shot over the goalkeeper’s head. She did it again from the middle five minutes later, and the Huskies led 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, “we decided to get Megan Rubidoux out of defense,” Santana said. He put her in right forward, with Courtney Kent filling in for her on defense.

“In the ninth minute, she took the ball and just took a shot right at the goal, right over her (the goalie’s) head,” Santana said. In the 14th minute, she kicked in a shot from outside the goal area on a penalty kick.

“We played good in Junction City,” Santana said. “We’re happy with our win with Elmira. It was kind of sad we lost the Junction City games. It’s one of those things we’ve got to put our heads together and play better.”
