Elmira 2, Sweet Home 1
Elmira defeated Sweet Home 2-1 on the road on Oct. 21.
“We played pretty good,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. The girls were pretty competitive.
After scoring two goals in the first half, Ashley Wickline put the ball into the net near the end of the half, leaving the Huskies trailing 2-1.
At home against Junction City, it was soccer in a “mudhole,” with a soaking wet field and standing water, Santana said. Junction City won 4-1.
The water caused problems at goal for keeper Hailey Nicholson as she took a dive a couple of times, Santana said.
Jessie Thomas scored the Huskies goal from defense, Santana said. She took the ball across the middle and down the field for a shot near the end of the game, about the minute 32 in the second half.
Junction City scored twice in each half.
The losses end the Huskies’ season with a 2-8 record in league and a record of 3-11 overall.
Overall, the team was inexperienced and young this year, and Santana is optimistic about its chances next year as the Huskies graduate just three seniors, while returning three juniors and a bunch of experienced freshmen and sophomores.
At a league coaches meeting, Santana learned that the other coaches “expected to do more damage” against the Huskies, he said, but “they had to really work at it. It was not as easy as they thought.”
Lose or win, the girls played every game the same way, Santana said. They were always looking for the win. The Huskies gave every opponent a fight, and the young players gained alot of varsity experience.
“It will be different for us next year,” Santana said. “We will be more competitive. We will be up there somewhere.”
