Girls face playoff against Junction City after soccer win at LaPine

The Huskies girls soccer team defeated La Pine 3-1 Monday afternoon to qualify for league playoffs against Junction City sometime this week.

“We played good,” said Coach Ramiro Santana. A windy, cold day, the Huskies chose to have the wind in their favor to start with the idea of holding out defensively if necessary.

The Huskies scored three goals in the first half. La Pine scored one.

With the Huskies in a comfortable 3-0 lead, La Pine scored on a corner kick, Santana said. Sabrina Davis called out, “Got it.”

“Somehow, it went between her legs and she didn’t ‘got it,’” Santana said.

The Huskies scored their first goal in the minute 16, Santana said. Megan Rubidoux took the ball in after Kristen Tolle passed the ball inbounds.

The second was a corner kick from Rubidoux, Santana said. His team was bunched up, and he didn’t see whether Katie Virtue or Alana Long actually scored the goal.

Rubidoux scored the third goal bringing the ball up from midfield and cruising past the defense into a one-on-one with La Pine’s keeper.

With the win, the Huskies, 3-7 in league, are fourth place in the Sky-Em and will play Junction City, which has six wins, four losses and one tie in league.

Santana did not know which day the two teams would play, but he expects it to be Saturday. For information, call the high school at 367-7142.

The Huskies must win this game to make the state playoffs, Santana said. They lost to Junction City 3-2 at home and 4-0 on the road when Junction City added a new dominant player to its roster.

Now the Huskies are aware of the threat, ShayLee Miner, Santana said, and they’ll have to keep her in mind.

“Our girls are playing much better, which is good,” Santana said. “They’re starting to peak. It’s good going into the playoffs. It’s not so good when you’re trying to qualify.”

In the past few games, they’ve done relatively well, Santana said. “You could see they wanted it.

“They knew they had to win. They played very good. They’re passing was something I haven’t seen for a little while.”
