Girls fall to two of league’s best soccer teams

The Sweet Home girls soccer team got a taste of the best the 4A-3 Oregon West Conference has to offer last week, matching up against the league’s two best teams, Woodburn and Philomath.

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the Huskies were mercy-ruled by Woodburn 8-0 on the road. On Thursday, Sept. 16, they lost 6-0 to Philomath at Husky Field.

Woodburn’s pace of play was too much for Sweet Home.

“It’s their passing abilities and their speed,” said Head Coach Ramiro Santana. “We just don’t have the speed to match up. They are so good, so strong.”

He noted that Woodburn was moved to 5A on the boys side for soccer after dominating the 4A. “I don’t know if anybody can really play them at our level,” he said.

Woodburn scored its first four goals in the game’s first 19 minutes. By halftime, the Bulldogs led 7-0. They then scored their final goal 10 minutes into the second half, kicking the eight-goal mercy rule into effect and ending the contest early.

Sweet Home only got three shots on goal in the game, Santana said.

Against Philomath, the Huskies held strong at first, but eventually failed to keep the Warriors’ offense at bay.

The game was scoreless until the 31st minute when the Warriors found their stride, finding the back of the net four times before halftime. They tacked on two more second-half goals to take the 6-0 victory. The Huskies put four shots on goal, but were unable to put any points on the board.

“They pass the ball very quick. They don’t hold it much,” Santana said of Philomath. “After 30 minutes, our girls got tired from all the chasing.”

Philomath’s “physical and pushy” squad, according to Santana, had an impact on Sweet Home’s roster, as four girls were sidelined in the game with injuries.

Senior goalkeeper Andra Gordon, who was hit in the head in an earlier game, was pulled because she felt dizzy. Senior forward Maddie Harris was kicked in the knee. Senior forward Chloe Fairchild fell and hit her head, suffering a headache. And sophomore center midfielder Rylee Markell went down with a concussion.

After Friday’s practice, Santana said he expects that none of those four starters will be available for the game at Sisters on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
