Sweet Home girls basketball went 1-2 at the SCTC Holiday Classic at Stayton High School Dec. 28-30, first losing to Baker 58-23 and Ridgeview 54-29, but rebounding to beat Cottage Grove 45-28.
Facing off against No. 3-ranked Baker (7-1), Sweet Home (4-6, No. 27) was down 33-9 at halftime on the way to the 58-23 loss.
Senior Brooke Burke led the team with 15 points and senior Meeja Bitter added four for the Huskies.
“Baker is one of the strongest teams we’ve ever played,” said Head Coach Michelle Knight. “I felt like we did what we could against them and learned a lot.”
Against 5A Ridgeview, the Huskies kept it close, only down 18-16 at half, before the Ravens won the third quarter 22-5 on their way to the decisive victory.
The Ravens (3-6) outshot the Huskies 35.2% to 28.1% from the field, and the Huskies turned the ball over 28 times, leading to 28 points off turnovers for Ridgeview.
Burke scored 16 points on 4-13 shooting from the field. Sophomore Kaylynn Mamac added seven on 3-6 shooting.
Knight noted that Mamac had some foul trouble in the game, which kept her out of the contest much of the second half.
In the win against Cottage Grove (3-9), Sweet Home jumped out to a commanding 18-3 lead in the first quarter that they did not relinquish. The Huskies outshot the Lions 40.5% to 21.4% from the field in the game, and had 26 points in the paint compared to just six for the Lions.
Burke led the team with 22 points on 8-17 shooting, along with a team-leading eight rebounds. Mamac had 11 points on 2-5 shooting for the Huskies.
Knight said of the game “We took the things we learned from games one and two and applied them. Our shooting and free throw percentages were much higher on day three as well.”
This week the Huskies host 3A Pleasant Hill (8-1) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6.
