Cottage Grove 50, Sweet Home 41
The Huskies were leading Cottage Grove heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lions scored 21 points to snatch the victory 50-41 against Feb. 8 in Sweet Home in girls basketball.
“We had them where we wanted them,” said Coach John Barnes.
Cottage Grove built an 11-5 lead in the first quarter, but the Huskies kicked it into high gear in the second, with Megan Rubidoux leading the way, scoring 10 of her 19 points in the quarter. The Huskies nearly caught up to Cottage Grove at halftime when Rylee Cole connected a three-point prayer on the buzzer, trailing 25-24.
The Huskies scratched out a one-point lead, 30-29, by the end of the third quarter.
“We matched their intensity,” Barnes said. “Our defense in that third quarter set the tone.
“Cottage Grove in that fourth quarter went on a run,” Barnes said. “We were able to answer them and not let it get away. Overall, I’m really pleased with the effort.”
He was especially proud that his team held Cottage Grove’s larger post to 14 on the game and scoreless in the first and third quarters.
“I thought our team defense kept us close in that game.”
The Huskies had trouble getting to the foul line, Barnes said. They shot 1-4. Cottage Grove shot 7-17 from the free throw line.

The Huskies lost 55-24 at Elmira Friday night.
The Huskies trailed 14-4 after one quarter and 31-9 at halftime. Elmira led 45-13 at the end of the third quarter.
“It was just the post presence,” Barnes said. “We came out I think a little flat in that first half.”
But the smaller Huskies had a hard time dealing with post pressure and pulling down the boards, he said.
Annie Whitfield returned to the floor, scoring two points, after spending several weeks out with an injury.
“Whitfield’s doing much better, getting back in the swing,” Barnes said.
