Sciot defeated the Sweet Home High School varsity girls 62-21 Friday at Scio.
“We got chainsawed,” said Coach Steve Brown. “They’re a pretty good program and well-established. It was good to see where we’re at and where we need to be.”
The Huskies scored the first bucket of the game, Brown said. “It just didn’t go in after that.”
The Huskies trailed 13-2 after one quarter and 33-8 at halftime. The deficit expanded to 49-17 after three quarters.
The Huskies were plagued by turnovers, Brown said. “They played man-to-man. We were moving. We were doing what we were supposed to be doing.”
But the passes were grenades thrown too hard when a bounce pass would work, and the girls would turn the ball over, he said. Against a frustrating press, it was one of those situations where they bounced the ball off their foot.
“They pressed us, and we didn’t handle the press too well,” Brown said. He thinks a lot of it was first-game nerves. Most of the Huskies hadn’t been in an intense game situation yet.
The Huskies probably rebounded better than they did last year, Brown said, and they had several plays that went beautifully, just like they had been drawn up.
Among them was a high pass from Ally Tow to Jordan Miller, who easily scored a layup.
Overall, the Huskies found their looks at the basket diminished by the high number of turnovers.
Miller led scoring with 10 points. Tow added six, Kaitlynn Autry added three, and Jessica Stockman scored two. India Porter, Brittany Brownell and Melaney Wilson played but did not score.
The Huskies lost their second game of the season at home on Monday, 41-38, to Taft.
