Sisters 41, Sweet Home 36
Opening league play in girls basketball, the Sisters Outlaws defeated the Huskies 41-36 Friday night in Sweet Home.
The Outlaws found their winning margin in the first quarter with 11 early Husky turnovers.
At the end of the first quarter, the Huskies trailed 10-4. The Huskies matched Sisters in the second quarter to trail 21-15. Sisters led 34-25 after three quarters.
In the third, Sisters went built a nine-point lead, said Coach John Barnes, but the Huskies erased that lead and went ahead by a point. Then shooting went cold. The Huskies shot 0-6 the last three minutes of the game.
The team had only 11 turnovers after the first quarter, he said. “We played evenly the rest of the way. We had opportunities. That was the nice thing.
“I think we had some jitters to be honest.”
After the girls settled into their defense, they started creating some offense, Barnes said, and that put them back into the game.
“I would say that it was one of the building blocks, stuff we can learn from,” he said.
Sisters is a good team, with a lot of seniors who have played together for awhile, he said. “We didn’t get the win, but there’s a lot of good things that came out of that game.”
The Huskies will play Elmira Friday at home.
A team that’s been down for a few years, Elmira will bring post presence to Sweet Home Friday night, Barnes said. The team is running a little better than .500 this year and will be a challenge.
