Girls struggle at foul line, lose in opening week of basketball

The girls basketball team lost in its first three outings this season.

The girls lost 61-22 to Yamhill-Carlton at home on Dec. 2. They trailed 24-6 at halftime.

Megan Rubidoux led Husky scoring with nine points. Annie Whitfield and Megan Graville each added four; Emili Riggs, three; and Rilee Cole, two.

“We played really good defense in the first half,” Coach John Barnes said of the Huskies’ next game, against Stayton at home Dec. 3. The Huskies lost 50-15 at home.

Stayton led 6-2 after one quarter and 15-6 at halftime, Barnes said. While defense was improved from the night before during the first half, the Huskies continued to suffer at the foul line.

Rubidoux led scoring with nine points. Graville, Whitfield and Dawnnita Justham each scored two.

The Huskies finished their week on Saturday at Lebanon, losing 63-24.

Rubidoux scored 10. Kishya Davis and Annie Whitfield each scored three. Cole, Cortnie Cuilla, Riggs and Graville each scored two.

“I thought we rebounded pretty well for having a height disadvantage,” Barnes said looking back at the week. “We have our good quarters, and our lapse quarters. I thought definitely we got better, especially from Yamhill-Carlton to Stayton, but we have quite a ways to go.”
