Girls work to put pieces together for first hoops win

Lebanon 38, Sweet Home 22

The girls got their hands on the rebounds and took a lot of shots, but the shots didn’t fall as they fell at home Monday night 38-22 to Lebanon.

Lebanon, a 5A school, is ranked tenth in the state in its division, said Coach John Barnes, and the girls did better than they did the last time the teams met this season.

Lebanon led 15-5 after the first quarter and 24-12 at halftime. Lebanon stretched its lead to 36-18 by the end of the third.

“The kids played hard,” Barnes said. “I think the effort was the best of the non-league schedule so far.

“I think we flowed a little better tonight. We got a lot of shots off, which is, again, what we need to do. We got a lot of good looks, and we’re starting to run the offense.”

The team pulled down plenty of rebounds, Emili Riggs with 11 and Annie Whitfield with six.

The Huskies didn’t get to the foul line often, but shooting 5-9 their percentage was higher than the beginning of the season.

Brown hadn’t worked out their shot percentage from the field yet, he said. The girls had good open looks, but the ball didn’t fall as often as they needed to get the win.

“I was really pleased with the effort overall,” Barnes said, especially against a team with such a height advantage as Lebanon.

Elmira 51, Sweet Home 35

Elmira defeated the Huskies 51-35 Saturday at home.

The two teams opened the game in a tight race to a first-quarter tie of 7-7.

The Huskies gave up 39 turnovers on the game, Barnes said. “The turnovers would be the story.”

Elmira started scoring the ball in the second quarter to take a 20-11 lead by halftime. Elmira expanded that lead to 28-15 by the end of the third.

Both teams ended up at the foul line frequently, and the Huskies performed better at the line than Elmira, shooting 16-27.

Elmira shot 13-34 from the line.

“They had a lot of misses in the fourth quarter, which helped us,” Barnes said.

Friday night, the Huskies lost at Gladstone 63-24.
