Golfers bring scores down in home invitational

Home proved sweet for the boys golf team Wednesday, April 20, as the Huskies recorded their best round of the year – albeit against some tough competition.

Sweet Home finished last in its own invitational at Mallard Creek, but, as Coach Tom Horn said, the other competitors were “very good teams.”

McMinnville won the event with a team score of 317, followed by Molalla (324), Stayton (356), Silverton (365), Sisters (367), Lebanon (372) and the Huskies, who finished last with a 375.

“McMinneville is a high-powered 6A school and Molalla played their best of the season,” Horn said.

So did Sweet Home’s Mike Fontenot, who shot 86, including a 41 on the back nine and all the scoring players for the Huskies broke 100 for the first time this season. Blake Martin shot 94, followed by Cody Daniels (97), Jason Rice (98), Roman Kinney (99) and Zach Miller (106).

“Blake Martin had his best day of the season,” Horn said. “He broke 50 on both nines.”

At Quail Run (La Pine) on Thursday, the Huskies faced four other Sky-Em teams, trailing winner Junction City (349) and Cottage Grove (370) to finish with a team score of 380, with La Pine unable to field a full team.

Sweet Home, which finished with a 380, barely had a full team itself, as the Huskies were missing Rice, due to illness. Fontenot again led the team with an 86, and Daniels was right behind, with a 90, his best round in competition.

“Cody had his best scoring day of the year – a 90 with a 43 on the back round,” Horn said. “Mike is as consistent as ever.”

He said Sweet Home is “not far” from competing with both Cottage Grove and Sisters for second place in the league.

“We need everyone to score at one time,” Horn said. “We’re getting closer.”

The varsity is scheduled to play Thursday, April 28, at Arrowhead in Molalla.

The JV boys played at Arrowhead on Thursday, playing 18 holes and finishing sixth of nine schools competing.

Casey Horner and Michael Tolle led the team with 106 each, while Christian Porter finished with 111 and Kyle Hamilton had 122. They will play again Wednesday at Cottage Grove.
