Oct. 5, 1918-Aug. 3, 2007
Harvey H. Zoom, 88, died on Aug. 3, 2007.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1918 and grew up on a farm in Ridgefield, Wash. He helped his family through the Great Depression.
At 18, he left for Eastern Oregon to work in the harvest fields. Returning, he met Betty Mathison and married her in 1941 after a four-year courtship. His first son, Harvey Wallace, was born in 1942.
The couple moved to Eastern Oregon, and Mr. Zoom hauled logs in his new log truck. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army, and he fought in the Philippines during World War II. During the war, another son, Donald, was born in 1945. After serving a year and a half in combat, he returned to his trucking business.
In 1950, the family moved to Smith River, Calif., where his business grew and expanded into logging. The company was known as Harvey Zoom and Son Logging.
A daughter, Jo Ann, was born in 1952. Marilyn was born two years later.
Mr. Zoom continued to work in California until 1960 when he moved to Eugene so his daughter, Jo Ann, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, could attend Children’s Hospital School.
In 1965, Dale was born; and 11 years later, he moved his family to a 68-acre ranch near Sweet Home. He continued to log with his eldest son and then retired in 1978 when his son, Harvey Wallace took over the business.
He spent many happy hunting and fishing trips with his family. In his later years, he had a Chris Craft boat for the ocean where he enjoyed his hobby of fishing.
He was preceded in death by two children, Jo Ann and Donald.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Harvey and wife, Vicky, and Dale and wife, Stacey; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Steve Peterson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Aug. 6 at the Albany First Assembly.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home in Albany.
