Sweet Home’s Jakob Hiett, Spencer Knight and Ashton Stutzman all won medals for the Huskies at the 4A state track and field championships Friday and Saturday, May 23-24, at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Hiett, a junior, placed second in the 3000 and third in the 1500, while Knight placed fourth in the 100, all with big PR’s. Stutzman finished eighth in the high jump.
Overall, the meet wasn’t what they Huskies have gotten used to in recent years, though the medal count for the boys was one more than last year. After having 10 athletes place third at the district meet, just missing a trip to state, the rhythm still wasn’t really there for Sweet Home at Hayward Field.
That was especially the case for senior Ben Terry, who was primed to place among the top 4A shot put throwers in the state, but fouled on all three of his attempts and did not place.
“The nerves got to him,” Coach Billy Snow said. “It’s kind of surprising for a veteran like that, but it happens. Other than that, the kids actually performed very well. All of them were at or near their PR.”
Freshman Trey Reed did not advance in the 400 prelims, but he was also one of only two runners among the 14 who were not juniors or seniors.
“It was pretty nerve-wracking, especially when you’re the only freshman,” he said. “I just went into the race and did my own thing.”
Reed’s time of 52.86 was a little off the personal record of 52.18 he set the previous week in qualifying for state, but he said he expects the experience to help him in the future.
“I’m just going to focus on cross-country and train during the winter and show these guys who I am next year,” he said.
Also qualifying for state but failing to get past the prelims was junior India Porter in the triple jump. Porter finished 12th with a best effort of 32-3¾, short of the 33-9 PR she posted in the district meet, which would have gotten her a seventh-place medal at state.
Haley Kent, who finished third at districts in the 200 but qualified for state after second-place finisher Natalie Ambrose of Sisters opted to concentrate on the 400 at state, finished 13th in 27.19, just shy of the PR of 27.17 she clocked last week at districts.
“India did a lot better than she did last year,” Snow said. “And Haley was only a couple hundredths off her PR. That was just a really tough field.”
Without any finalists, the girls went scoreless for the second year in a row. The boys were 17th, with 19½ points. Elmira was the top scorer from the Sky-Em conference, finishing 12th with 22½ points, with Sisters finishing 15th (20.5).
North Bend won a tight race for the boys title with 51 points, while North Valley cruised to the girls team championship on the backs of the D’Arpino twins, Kerissa and Vanessa, who went 1-2 in all three sprints and led the Knights’ 4×100 relay team to a championship as well. The D’Arpinos earlier this year signed to run at Oregon State University.
Knight said his time in the prelims of the 100 was “pretty slow” so he focused in the final on getting a good start and “finishing out strong.” That’s pretty much what happened, though he ran in Lane One and couldn’t really see what was happening to his right. Knight posted a PR of more than half a second, running 11.24 in a fast final. Elmira’s Bo Highburger, one of Knight’s biggest competitors this year, was fifth in 11.30.
The 100 winner was senior Brandon Ellwagner of Baker, who didn’t even run at state last year, but who came into this year’s meet after having just won the 4A state golf championship.
For Knight, the medal in the 100 was a relief after a high school career in which he has been hampered by frequent injuries and then missing state last year in a competitive district final in which he placed third by two-hundredths of a second in a time that would have gotten him third place at the state meet.
“It feels good,” he said of finally getting on the podium at state. “I wanted to end on a high note. I think wrestling this year helped me a lot with injuries and just mental toughness. I give credit to Coach (Steve)Thorpe for that. Yeah, it was a good finish. I’m glad I finished out healthy.”
Snow said Knight overcame a poor start and what appeared to be a break in his stride midway through the prelim to make the final and that was what mattered.
“Spence didn’t have good first day but that second race was really good,” he said. “I was really proud of Spencer. You have to focus that stuff out of there. (Assistant Coaches) Jim (Kistner) and (Ramiro) had him warmed up and ready to go.”
Hiett returned to the state meet this year after placing fifth in the 3000 and seventh in the 1500 last year as a sophomore.
He finished second in the 3000 and third in the 1500. Siuslaw senior Mack Marbas was the winner in both races, running 3:58.47 in the 1500 nad 8:42.75 in the 3000.
In the 3000, Marbas managed to build a lead over Hiett and a small pack of front runners in the 3000, and though he clearly hit a wall in the last lap of the 3000, Hiett was too far back to reel him in.
“I wish I would have stuck with Mack,” Hiett said. “ I think when he first went out, I was a little hesitant to mix it up with him, but then I thought, ‘This pace is a little slower than it should be,’ so I went out. It was really fun. I can’t complain about second. It’s always awesome to PR.”
In the 1500 Marbas, Hiett and Sisters’ Brandon Pollard battled for the first two laps before Marbas pulled away.
Hiett, whose only previous losses this season were to Marbas and Pollard, both in the 1500, said he enjoyed having competition.
“It’s fun to race against all those class people,” he said. “Even though I ran the third and fourth lap (in the 1500) all by myself, because those other guys were way ahead of me, I wouldn’t do anything different.”
Snow noted that Hiett wound up the season with the third-fastest times in the 800, the 1500 and the 3000 at the 4A level.
“Jakob had two good races,” he said. “He stuck his nose in there.”
In the high jump, Stutzman cleared 5-10 but was unable to clear the 6-0 he made at the district meet. Sisters’ Jake McAllister, who edged him in the district meet with a leap of 6-1, finished tied with Stutzman for eighth.
Snow said he was disappointed that Stutzman didn’t clear 6-0, but not disappointed in Stutzman.
“His first and third jumps were good,” Snow said. “I’ve seen people hit the bar harder and have it stay up there.”
Also placing at state in the 2A competition, from Sweet Home but not for the Huskies, were East Linn Christian freshmen McKayla Horner, second in the shot (32-6½) and fourth in the discus (102-0),
and Sydney Nichol, who was second in the 1500 (4:59.95) and fourth in the 800 (2:25.28), as well as running the anchor leg on the Eagles’ third-place 4×400 team.
“It was smaller crew than we ‘re used to taking,” Snow said of Sweet Home.” When you take 10 thirds (at district), you don’t take as many bodies down there. I thought the kids we took represented Sweet Home very well. We got to walk away feeling pretty good about it. Everybody ended on a high note.”
