Huskies come through big on field at state

Scott Swanson

Going into the 2012 state track and field championships Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, thrower Annie Whitfield was a veteran, while Jade Corliss was a relative rookie.

Whitfield, a senior, was a four-time district champion who had achieved just about every milestone possible during her career as a javelin thrower for Sweet Home.

She’d reset the school record multiple times her last at 144 feet, 2 inches, had won nearly every javelin competition she’d been in as a high school thrower, and she’d been a three-time state placewinner, including two runner-up finishes.

But she’d never won the big one.

Jake Johnson whips the discus on its way in the finals. He placed fifth. Jade Corliss fires off her best shot of the day, 3 feet farther than her lifetime best coming into the state meet – 37-10½.

Corliss, a sophomore, threw the shot and discus in junior high, then decided to try softball as a high school freshman. She returned to track this year and steadily improved in both the shot and the discus, qualifying for state in the shot with a throw of 34-2 ½ on May 19, nearly a 4-foot improvement from her the beginning of the season.

That all changed last weekend.

On her second-to-last throw in the state finals, when Whitfield unleashed a throw of 141-11 to outstrip her nearest competitor, Kacie Hargett of Newport, by seven feet for the 4A title, finally nailing that elusive state title.

On Saturday, Corliss nearly followed suit, launching a throw that landed at 37 feet, 10½ inches – a personal best of more than 3 feet.

Their efforts helped the Sweet Home girls to 11th place in the team competition, with 22 points. Gladstone, with a deep team that relied on multiple place-winners behind one individual champion, took the team title with 65½ points, followed by Molalla (55), Sisters (52½) and Newport (51). Cottage Grove tied for eighth with 28 points.

“We had a good weekend,” Coach Billy Snow said. “We knew we weren’t going down there to trophy,” he said. “We didn’t have the guns. But we certainly had goals in mind. One was to get Annie over the hump. Man, that was exciting.”

On the boys side, senior Nick Hall placed fourth in the 300 hurdles (40.71) and sixth in the 400 (51.59).

“Nick in the 400 struggled a bit,” Snow said. “I don’t know what happened.

“He had some good hurdle races – decent times. He ran a good corner, but he just couldn’t get into his rhythm when everybody got tired.”

Snow noted that Hall has placed in at least one event in four straight state meets, counting his leg on the boys 4×400 relay when he was a freshman.

In the boys discus, senior Jake Johnson was fifth, with a best of 137-6.

Those performances gave the Huskies 12 points, good for 20th place.

La Pine won the championship with 48 points, followed by North Valley (46), Newport (44) and Molalla (37).

Devyn Makin finished fifth in the long jump, with a best of 16-8, to round out the girls scoring, turning in one of the most consistent series of jumps in the field – all but one over 16.

But Claire Thomas of Molalla, on her final jump, hit the board perfectly to soar 19-1½.

“Devyn, she jumped well,” Snow said. “She never had a scratch. That was the best outing of her career. She was in the lead when she took her first jump but she has nothing to hang her head about. When get someone like Thomas is an inch short of the meet record, that’s nothing to be ashamed of. That event got tough in our division this year.”

Sweet Home also got a seventh-place finish from its girls 4×100 relay team of seniors Makin, Jessika Stewart and Whitfield, and sophomore Courtney Kent. It was the fourth straight finals appearance in that event for the seniors.

“They were consistent,” Snow said of the four. “(Assistant Coach) Jim (Kistner) and I were talking about it. They were consistent, very consistent, with what they were able to do. Not too many schools, and certainly not us, can say they’ve placed four years in the state meet in that event.

“That was fun to see for those girls. They really had a lot invested in that emotionally.”

That finish, along with the three individuals, pushed the Husky girls much farther than Snow said coaches expected.

“We had them pegged originally at 13 points and we scored 22,” he said.”

Nicole Ramussen, who has been struggling with back problems this season, finished 10th in the 3000, in 11:15.57. It was evident early on that it was going to be a long race for the sophomore.

“She came past the finish line after 200 meters and I knew something wasn’t right,” Snow said. “For her to run that time with the back like that, she tried and she tried.”

In the boys 3000, Jakob Hiett, the only freshman to make state in the distances, was 10th in 9:22.67 while junior Daniel Danforth finished 13th, in 9:52.83. Hiett was 12th in the 1500, in 4:17.00.

“We told Jakob, ‘Hey, just go race, put your nose in there and see what happens,” Snow said. “He PR’d in the 3000, and was three-tenths of a second off his PR in the 1500.

That’s a tough double for anybody. For Jakob to go out there to do what he did, that’s a real, special talent.”

The boys short relay team of Spencer Knight, Hall, Kyler Gaskey and Chris Carpenter finished ninth in Friday’s prelim, running 45.03, to miss the eight-team final by one spot.

The 4×400 relay team of Carpenter, Hall, Trever Olson and Scottie Stockman, was 10th in Friday’s prelim, in 3:33.54.

“Unfortunately, for the guys, they didn’t have their best days and best times when they needed it,” Snow said. “For the short relay, the opening was there to get into finals, but just didn’t have their best day.

“The long relay was the same thing. They ran their guts out, but they just didn’t have it that day. 3:30 is what it takes just about every year. But we had three guys on there hadn’t run it before this year.”

Hall, the lone veteran on the team, said that, though they didn’t make the final, it was good experience.

“It gave the seniors a chance to go out with a boom and it gave the new guys a chance to run on that track,” he said.

Annie Whitfield’s father Randy Whitfield, a former state javelin champion himself and her coach throughout her career thus far, said her win in her fourth trip to state was the realization of a goal they had set “a long time ago.”

“I thought it would just be a great cap to her career as a high school javelin thrower,” he said. “The competition looked pretty tough going in. I talked to her about rising to the occasion.”

He said the plan was for Annie to throw a big one, “a shot across the bow,” early on, but that didn’t work out too well after Kacie Hargett of Newport opened with a shot of 135-2, five feet farther than his daughter’s opening throw.

Still trailing Hargett by that margin after the three preliminary throws, the Whitfields had a chat before finals.

“I told her that these were the last three throws of her high school career,” Randy Whitfield said. “She went out there and threw big ones.”

Bailey Bars of Hidden Valley, who was lurking just behind the two leaders, threw 131-10 on her second attempt in the finals and that got Annie Whitfield going, she said. She responded with a throw of 141-2.

“As soon as that girl threw farther than me, that’s when it clicked,” she said, adding that she had a little trouble getting everything in synch in front of the big crowd at Hayward.

“It was the pressure of the big meet, to be honest,” she said. “It’s definitely a lot harder when you’re at state and you have all those people around you.”

Whitfield then followed that up with her best of the day, 141-11, to win going away.

“It was pretty cool,” Randy Whitfield said. “Track and field is a personal thing. I think you always have to control it and do the best you can with it. She didn’t hold anything back.”

In the shot put, Corliss got off to a decent start, nailing a PR on her final throw of prelims to win her flight with a 36-1.

Assistant Coach Krystal Streight suggested Corliss do a couple of sprints back and forth next to the shot put venue before her throws.

Corliss responded with her big throw, 37-2½, in the second round of the finals.

“I’m not sure what it was, exactly,” she said. “I got some good hip motion on that one.

“To be honest, I didn’t even think I would make the finals, since I came in throwing only 34 and a half, The other girls were throwing 36’s.

“When (Assistant Coach) Andrew (Allen) asked me what my goal was, I said ‘over 36.’ He said, ‘Your goal should be just to make the final.’”

Corliss said she was motivated by the example of Streight, the school record-holder at 40-9, set as a senior in 2005.

“Coach Krystal told me that if I was throwing 35 by my sophomore year, I would be where she was. I’m excited.”

So was Snow.

“Jade, what a day,” he said. “She was so nervous on the bus, on the way there. We said, ‘Just go out there and throw.

“With a kid brand new to it, you just hope they get down there and get their feet wet. She went down and won her flight. Only two throwers made improvements in the finals. One was Jade. That was just huge for that girl.”

Johnson, who failed to place last year as a junior, was focused on getting on the medals stand this year and although his big throw of 137-11, which got him into the finals, was less than he was hoping for, he said the state meet pressure helped him in the end.

“It’s the big one and the last one,” he said. “If everything was clicking I think I can throw in the 150s.”

Snow noted that Johnson has become “a solid thrower” this year.

“It was a good followup to what he did last year,” he said, referring to Johnson’s failure to make the finals as a junior in his first state meet. “The same thing could have happened but it didn’t.”

Johnson said he hopes to compete at the BorderDuel Track Classic June 2, at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, which will bring together athletes from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. He said he then hopes to continue throwing at Lane Community College, where Hall has already signed to run track.

For Hiett, the state meet was also a first-time experience.

“It was really neat how big and professional the meet was,” he said. “Everything went like clockwork, everybody was in the right spot. At every corner everybody was clapping for you.”

He said he was happy with his 3000 performance, which took place after the weather had warmed up to the mid-70s on the track.

“The heat didn’t bother me,” he said. “I listened to what (Allen) said and I must have picked off four or five guys. I just wished I could have picked off that last guy.”

Hall had a tough time on Friday, getting confused by the lines on the Hayward Field track and briefly running out of his lane in the 400 prelim, and slowing down on the home stretch because, he said, he thought he was going to be disqualified.

As it turned out, he wasn’t and although his slow-down and subsequent fourth-place finish (in 51.85) had coaches worried that he hadn’t made the final, he did, in seventh place.
