Huskies fifth at Oregon Classic; move on to TofC this weekend

Sweet Home finished fifth Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Oregon Classic wrestling tournament in Redmond.

The Huskies, facing some of the top 4A schools in the state, lost a 39-33 match to Scappoose in their opening pool, which eliminated them from a chance at the overall trophy, which went to Crook County.

“If we didn’t finish first in our pool, we couldn’t trophy,” explained Coach Steve Thorpe, who noted that the rules changed this year. “In the past we did cross-overs – one (the top finisher in one pool) would have wrestled two (the second-place finisher in another pool) and two would have wrestled one.”

Senior Tyler Schilling pinned his way through at 126 pounds, as did junior Tyrel Miller at 132. Sophomore Kobe Olson had four pins and a technical fall at 113 pounds.

“We need to improve; there are several things we need to get better at,” Thorpe said. “But one thing (the Huskies) are not is unselfish. They’re willing to step out to give another an opponent or to move up a weight class.

“To win a dual a couple of times we had to bump people up, move guys around.”

He said he was proud of the Huskies for bouncing back after the loss to Scappoose.

“I would have liked to beat Scappoose and we had a couple of swing matches we should have won, but the way we responded was coming back and winning the next four duals. We were 4-1 on the week.”

On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Huskies stopped in Sisters on their way to Redmond, winning duals against the Outlaws (82-0) and LaPine (66-16).

This weekend, Sweet Home, 25-3 in duals, will compete at the Tournament of Champions at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. Wrestling starts at 11 a.m. Friday in what is considered one of the toughest tournaments in the state.

Schilling, a senior, returns as defending champion and 124-pound fellow senior Anthony Hardee was fifth last year. Olson was one match away from a medal at 103 pounds, and Jake Porter, then a freshman, was fifth in a very tough 138-pound JV tournament.

“I like where we are at,” Thorpe said,. “We’re getting ready to go to the Tournament of Champions, then on to the regional tournament.”
