Sweet Home’s wrestlers finished fourth out of 25 teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California at the Rose City Championships at Westview High School Dec. 12-13.
Tyler Schilling was the only individual champion for the Huskies, beating teammate Tyrel Miller in the 132-pound final to win the title for the second year in a row.
“It was definitely a great match,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Very fun to watch.”
He said Schilling “dominated the tournament,” pinning his way to the final and beating Miller 7-3 in the final.
Kobe Olson finished second at 120 pounds and Jason Miller finished sixth at 160.
Several Sweet Home wrestlers finished a match out of placing: Ricky Yunke at 113, JC Elder at 106, Dillon Stutzman at 120, and Cole Ashcraft at 182.
“I was pretty excited about them coming close to placing,” Thorpe said. “This is a big, tough tournament. There’s a 32-man bracket with pigtails in some divisions, so some weights had 40 or 50 kids. It’s great to go in there and do what we did.”
Sweet Home will compete at the Lebanon Invitational at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, with duals against Tillamook, Tigard and Lebanon. The tournament will only be on Friday this year.
The Huskies hosted South Albany, Stayton and Sutherlin in a round-robin dual tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 9, beating all three. Results are below:
