Huskies get little revenge over Regis

The Huskies dominated league rivals Cottage Grove and Sisters last week in softball; but in even bigger action and a much tighter contest on Monday, they defeated Regis 3-2 in nine innings.

The Huskies lost to Regis 7-0 at on the road in their opening game of the season. It is their only loss so far.

The wins extend the Huskies record to 4-0 in league and 7-1 overall.

“The game was a defensive struggle for both teams, a classic softball game that had a little bit of everything,” said Coach Steve Hummer. “The Huskies’ defense committed no errors and played flawlessly, giving the offense a chance to make something happen and push across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.”

Sarah Wyatt shined at third, making three great plays on ground balls in key situations, Hummer said. Wyatt also collected two bunt singles, stole three bases and scored two runs.

Katie Virtue was also 2-3, with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Regis took the lead in the top of the eighth, but the Huskies came back in the bottom to tie the game.

Virtue hit a one-out single and stole a base to set the table for Hailey Hummer.

“Hailey put down a great bunt, and Katie was rounding third when Regis threw the ball away,” Hummer said. “Virtue scored, and the Huskies moved to the ninth.”

In the top of the ninth, the game went to the international tiebreaker, starting each inning with a runner at second.

The Huskies held the Rams at third after a bunt, Hummer said. Megan Graville got a key strikeout, and Ashley Cochran ran a popup down in shallow right field to hold Regis.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wyatt was the runner at second due to the last out of the eighth, Hummer said. Emili Riggs lined out to right field for the first out of the ninth. Hailey Hummer reentered Bayli Riggs into the game to hit. Wyatt stole third, and then Riggs delivered the game-winning hit to right centerfield, scoring Wyatt and giving the Huskies the win.

The Huskies defeated Cottage Grove under the 10-rule in the fifth inning on the road on April 9, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the first inning and never looking back in a 13-hit attack.

The Huskies were led by Shelbey Gillespie, who went 3-4 with a double and triple.

“She also threw out four runners trying to steal bases, showing off her defensive skills as well as her offensive punch,” Hummer said.

Cochran added three singles and two stolen bases. Wyatt and Megan Rubidoux each added two hits.

The Hsukies collected four hits in the first inning and added four stolen bases in the same frame.

“I talked to the girls about getting a lead early and they really executed,” Hummer said. “Six in the first was huge, but to add eight more in the second sealed the deal.

“We collected nine hits, five stolen bases and 14 runs in the first two innings. I was very proud of the way we attacked them.

“Shelbey really impressed me behind the plate today. Four runners caught stealing is huge, but to add three hits on top of that, she had a monster day.”

Graville pitched a solid game for the win, and Bayli Riggs came into the game in the fifth to finish, Hummer said.

Gillespie and Graville both hit homeruns, and Rubidoux, Cochran, Wyatt and Tasha Saunders added two hits each. Wyatt had four RBIs, and Jasmin Yoder added three stolen bases.

Sweet Home got the scoring started in the second inning with five hits highlighted by Megan Rubidoux’s triple. The Huskies scored five in the second and added four more in the third, led by Wyatt’s bases clear double.

The Huskies also got hits from Emili Riggs, Hailey Hummer and Bayli Riggs.

Defensively the Huskies were led by Bayli Riggs’ one-hit pitching through five innings, Hummer said. “She is really starting to come into her own and hit her spots. Bayli is really starting to pitch well. She is focused and starting to dominate games.”
