Sweet Home’s softball team trounced league rivals Philomath (3-12) and North Marion (1-9) last week, beating the Warriors 18-8 at home on Wednesday , April 19, and then destroying the other Huskies 16-0 on Saturday on the road.
Sweet Home then put up a solid showing on the road against the team ranked number one in the state, Stayton (14-3), losing just 6-0 after falling 13-2 to the Eagles earlier in the season.
The wins moved Sweet Home to 2-4 in the OWC and 3-9 overall, and into a fourth-place tie with Philomath in the conference standings.
Sweet Home outhit the Warriors 12-9 in their Wednesday win, as each team committed two errors apiece.
Sweet Home’s big offensive push came in the third inning when the Huskies scored eight runs. The game was called after sixth innings due to the 10-run rule.
Makayla Guthrie pitched all six innings for the Huskies, giving up four earned runs, on nine hits, striking out two and walking two.
Kelsie Rush led the Huskies with 3 hits, while also earning two RBIs. Natalie Smith and Trinity Victor each had two hits and three RBIs for the Huskies.
Statistics for the games against North Marion and Stayton were not available before press time.
This week the Huskies host Newport (9-7) and North Marion at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively (April 26 and 27).
The next day they play at 4:30 p.m. at Cascade (7-4). After that, the Huskies travel to Philomath for a 4:30 p.m. game on Monday, May 1.
