The Huskies opened summer baseball with a 4-3 loss under the lights at Cascade High School.
Next game, McKay High School defeated them and then they beat Lebanon 13-5.
They would have won under the 10-run rule, but since it was not the regular season, they played extra innings, allowing Lebanon to score two more runs, said Coach Matt Matuszak.
Sweet Home defeated Santiam Christian twice in a row, 10-6 and 12-8 last week, but lost to Philomath 12-2 Monday night.
“It’s been an up-and-down summer,” Matuszak said. Everything depends on who shows up. Some boys are working. Others are busy with basketball too, and Colton Holly and Austin Mizsei have been out with injuries.
The Huskies are playing in a structured league this summer, and their season will end the weekend of July 16 with a league tournament.
The league is tough, Matuszak said. It includes Albany, Corvallis and Salem teams such as Sprague – some of the best teams at the top level.
“We’ve been playing with a young crew,” Matuszak said. “A lot of kids are getting playing time.”
And the coaches are getting to see the younger players in action, he said.
“Obviously I’d like to see our scores look a little different,” he said.
“It’s just been a good competitive base for us,” Matuszak said. These are teams the Huskies don’t usually see, and they don’t know that much about them.
The Huskies will play Corvallis on Wednesday and host La Pine on Thursday and Friday.
