Husky alums making their marks in college

Senior guard Gavin Kauffman has averaged 8.7 points per game for the men’s basketball team at Lewis-Clark College in Idaho going into the holiday break at Christmas.

Kauffman, a senior, has played in every game for the 21st-ranked Warriors (13-3 after an 87-81 loss on Dec. 22 to Eastern Washington. Lewis-Clark beat Kwantlen Polytechnic University of Canada 119-48 on Dec. 21, its third-largest margin of victory in school history.

Tyler Cowger, a sophomore at Southern Oregon University and the only starter among four Sweet Home alumni wrestling there, reached the quarterfinals at 149 pounds at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 21. Three straight decisions, the last against Jonce Blaylock of Oklahoma State, got him there. Oregon State’s Jordan Hendrickson got Cowger in the quarterfinals, 10-6, and Wyoming’s Jake Elliott knocked him out 5-2 in the consolation bracket.

On Dec. 18, at its own Doc Welton Classic, second-ranked SOU beat third-ranked West Region rival Montana State-Northern 28-18. SOU is 5-1 in dual meets this season, still undefeated against NAIA foes, returns to dual action at the NAIA-NWCA Team Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Jan. 9-10.

The Raiders competed at the Midland Championships in Evanston, Ill. last weekend.

Senior Brock Crocker (165) and sophomores Zach Gill (285) and Scottie Stockman (145) also are wrestling for SOU.

Freshman Colton Schilling Earned a 3-2 mark at 141 pounds at the Reno tournament, improving his mark to 13-6 for the season. The Mustangs return to the mat Jan. 9 against Wyoming.

Freshman Trever Olson is 3-5 as a 149-pounder at Southwestern Oregon, with one pin. Southwestern Oregon will be back in action Jan. 3 after entering a limited roster, that didn’t include Olson, at the Reno tournament.
