Sweet Home won the Todd Surmon Invitational wrestling tournament at West Albany Saturday, Jan. 3, after placing in the top eight at the massive 28-team Northwest Duals tournament at Westview earlier in the week. {[more}}
At Westview, which included teams from Oregon, Washington and Alaska, the Huskies finished second in their pool after losing by four points to Snohomish of Washington, then finished with a 39-33 loss to Colony of Alaska and a 42-42 tie with Bend. They defeated Lakeridge 72-9, Cleaveland 44-27, West Albany 60-16, Westview 54-21 and Hood River 53-19.
Places were only awarded to the top four teams.
Westview marked the first loss of the season for Sweet Home senior Tyler Schilling, who was decisioned 12-7 by Hood River’s Christian Marquez, a “very good” wrestler, Coach Steve Thorpe said.
“We’re talking a state champion-quality wrestler,” he said. “It was a very good match, fun to watch. Ty wrestled hard. Those are the kinds of matches to wrestle if you want success later on.”
He said it’s difficult to single out any particular wrestler on his team because they are all wrestling “very solid.”
“The matches we’re getting out of my seniors right now are outstanding, but it’s not limited to that. Our juniors are giving us wins that are 12-point swings most of the time. This is not a senior-focused team. The leadership has made it a team. There is nothing they won’t do to get better.
“This is a fun place to coach and these are fun individuals to coach. It’s exciting and humbling.”
At West Albany, Sweet Home beat Newport 78-6, Ridgeview 57-22, St. Helens 66-9, West Albany 64-18 and, in the finals, Thurston 54-24.
Sweet Home travels to Churchill Wednesday, Jan. 7, for an endowment match, then will host Junction City and Philomath at 6 p.m. Thursday.
