Kauffman named baseball MVP

Gavin Kauffman was named Most Valuable Player at the Huskies annual baseball awards dessert on June 2 at the Sweet Home Mennonite Church.

Kauffman also won the Big Stick Award for his work at the plate. The award is selected by the coaching staff.

The MVP is selected by the team.

The Winfred Hackworth sportsmanship award went to J.T. Weld. The award, selected by the coaches, is given in honor of Winfred Hackworth, who died in a swimming accident in 1977.

In other team awards, JV Player of the Year was Zach Gill. Rookie of the Year was Kyle Winslow. Drayson Scott received the Hustle Award, and Grason Reynolds was Most Inspirational. Kyle Winslow was Most Improved.

Colton Holly received the Golden Glove Award, selected by the coaches based on defense statistics. Jeremy White was co-winner of the Big Stick Award with his league batting average of .534, the second highest in records kept since 1989.

Pitcher of the Year was Justin Rice with an ERA of 2.1, allowing a .200 batting average, striking out 40 batters and walking only nine; and Cory Hanks with an ERA of 3.2.

The varsity squad finished the year with a loss to Newport in the second round of state playoffs. North Valley defeated Newport in the semi-finals.

The junior varsity finished the year 14-3 overall and 11-1 in league. The Huskies outscored opponents 124-47 and gave up 29 runs in league.

Earning their first letters were freshman Austin Rice; sophomores Drayson Scott and Austin Mizsei; junior Kyle Winslow, who hit the team’s only triple in two years; and seniors Grason Reynolds and Bryce Seiber.

Second-year letters went to senior David Deggelman; juniors Hunter Bidwell, Cory Hanks and Jeremy White; and sophomores Nate Melcher, Justin Rice and Colton Holly.

Gavin Kauffman earned his third letter in baseball.

All-league awards included first-team members Kauffman, infield; Holly, outfield; and White, outfield, and second team members, Deggelman, infield; Justin Rice, infield; and Winslow, first base.
