Louise Landis

Louise Landis, 85, of Lebanon, formerly of Florence, died Sunday, Oct.30, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Mrs. Landis was born May 28, 1920 in Trenton, N.J., the daughter of Albert E. and Helen Louise (Crisp) Micklewright.

She graduated from Trenton High School in 1937. She received a bachelor’s degree from Wilson College in 1941 and a master’s degree from Wellesley College in 1945. She served in the W.A.V.E.S. Corps of the Navy during WWII from July of 1945 to September of 1946.

She received a Ph.D. in biology from Brown University in 1950.

Mrs. Landis was a college instructor in biology and anatomy and physiology at several colleges through the years. She taught at the University of Arizona from 1946 to 1948 and from 1951 to 1955. She moved to Philadelphia and worked as a researcher for Smith Kline & French Pharmaceutical Co. from 1955 to 1967. She came to Oregon in 1967 and taught at the Oregon College of Education, which is now Western Oregon University.

She married James Bard Landis, a medical doctor, in 1968. In 1970, she moved back to Philadelphia, again working for Smith Kline & French Pharmaceutical Company. She moved back to Oregon in 1973 and enjoyed being a “farm wife” at the family’s La Mancha Ranch in Sweet Home. She taught for several summers at Chemekata Community College in Salem and taught at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany from 1976 until her retirement in 1977. Her husband died in 1978.

In 1989, Mrs. Landis moved from the family ranch in Sweet Home to Florence. She lived there until moving to Lebanon a month ago.

Louise had worked as a volunteer for the American Red Cross in Philadelphia and Albany. She did volunteer work with the East Linn Museum in Sweet Home, and in Florence volunteered with the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum and the Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Florence.

Louise enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, and gourmet cooking. She loved writing and had a book of poetry published, she had also written a book. Another book of poems is due to be published posthumously.

She is survived by her son David Landis of Sweet Home; her daughters: Lura Lee “Judy” Landis of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Kim Landis of Brownsville; a brother: Richard Micklewright of Florence; and her granddaughter, Alicia Landis Rule of Colorado.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Robert Micklewright, and her sister Marjorie.
