Sweet Home’s Autumn Tree of the Year, chosen by the community, includes two winners.
They include the Elizabeth maple with deep red-gold fall leaves at the corner of the Sweet Home Post Office and a yellow maple at Key Bank.
Sweet Home residents voted for their favorite fall colors at this year’s Harvest Festival. The Sweet Home Tree Commission tallied the votes, which were split evenly between these two trees.
Photos of the trees in their fall colors are available on the Tree Commission website at http://www.ci.sweet-home.or.us, and they can also be seen in a picture display at City Hall.
The Sweet Home Autumn Tree of the Year event is the culmination of the year’s Tree Commission activities. This was the 25th year that Sweet Home was recognized as a Tree City USA. Sweet Home also was awarded the Oregon Tree City of the Year by the Oregon Community Trees Association.
“For 25 years, Sweet Home residents have shown their commitment to tree appreciation and tree care,” said Julie Fisher, planning assistant. “The award is a sign that this community cares about its livability and recognizes the important contributions that trees make to our quality of life.”
The volunteers of the Tree Commission have worked hard to improve the health and diversity of the city’s urban trees, Fisher said. “We would like to say thank you for everyone who has contributed to our projects.”
Alice Grovom, the Lions Club and Beth Liegel were recognized for donating trees.
