Jeff Erwin of Sawtooth Masters Swim Club of Idaho was the top finisher in the U.S. Masters Swimming One-Mile Open Water Championships held July 2 at Foster Lake.
Erwin, 47, swam 20:31.40 to win over Kurt Dickson, 43, of Arizona, who was second in 21:18.10.
Sandy MacDonald, 55, of Gold River, Calif. was one of three men who set national age group records. MacDonald, who once swam in the Olympic trials, finished in 21:24.38. Jim McConica, 60, (22:53.47) and David Radcliff, 77, (25:43.29) also set records.
In the women’s competition, Amy Holcomb, 31, of Central Oregon Masters Aquatics in Bend was the top finisher, in 22:40.36. Mary Sweat, 53, of COMA was second, in 22:45.55.
Three women, Catherine Imwalle, 61, of COMA (27:13.96), Suzanne Dills, 66, of San Diego, Calif. (26:39.14) and Adrienne Pipes, 77, of Hawaii (39.13.05) set new national women’s age-group marks.
Three men also set records in the two-mile for swim suit category I (non-wet suit): McDonald (42:19.38), Jim McConica, 60, of Ventura, Calif. (45:26.76), and David Radcliff of Hillsboro (50:55.91), who swam in the 1956 Olympics.
Jeff Erwin was the overall men’s winner of the two-mile non-wetsuit race, in 41:56.97.
The top female was Cara Shrum of Portland, in 48:36.44.
