When District 55 School Board member John Fassler moved to close Crawfordsville School at the Feb. 14 meeting, his motion also included a provision to look at potential new names for Holley School, which would absorb the Crawfordsville students.
Supt. Larry Horton said last week that a name change would cost money. He didn’t know how much, but it involved a process with the state bureaucracy that would take both time and money. He said the board might revisit the issue.
In the meantime, he has been receiving e-mails and phone calls about why or why not the district should change the name of Holley School. Horton said he didn’t detect any particular pattern to the comments.
Callers from both Holley and Crawfordsville had arguments both ways.
One district staff member said the name “Crolleyville Cougarhawks” had been suggested lightheartedly prior to the board’s decision to close Crawfordsville.
In that spirit, we would like to hear your ideas, funny or serious. Send your suggestion(s) by e-mail to [email protected] or drop off it off at our office at 1313 Main St. (We have a mail slot.) Include your name, address and phone number (the latter won’t be published) by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26.
This is entirely separate from the question before the School Board and the School District is not involved. This is in no way an endorsement for or against changing the school’s name.
We’ll select a panel of three judges, at least two from outside of our office, who will be identified, to select the most interesting name. The winner will receive a free year’s subscription to The New Era. If the winner is already a subscriber, he or she will get a one-year extension to his or her subscription. The winner will be announced as soon as possible in a future edition.
This contest is meant to be fun. Leave any emotional baggage and arguments about the merger at home or in the Letters to the Editor section.
Anyone may participate. Suggestions should not be vulgar or derogatory. The editorial staff at The New Era will be the final arbiter on that before the judges see the submissions.
