Nine persons were honored with VIP awards Saturday during the 60th Chamber of Commerce awards banquet held at the Boys and Girls Club.
The awards were presented by Mona and Bob Waibel, Alice Grovom and Bennie Dahlenburg of the President’s Club.
Phyllis Osborn: A Sweet Home High graduate who spent her life in education. She assists with the beautification committee helps plant bulbs in the median strip, weeds and plans. She chaired the Oregon Jamboree Arts and Crafts Fair and serves on the board of the Sweet Home Alumni Foundation.
Doug Gibson: His artistic talents have transformed the Veterans club building into a patriotic tribute to all service men and women and a point of pride for the community.
Karla Burcham: She’s one busy lady, helping with Sportsman’s Holiday and chaperoning the annual court, serving on the Chamber board and helping with numerous projects around town. She also serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club and the Sweet Home Alumni Foundation. In her “spare” time, she also coaches volleyball.
Vicki Lindley and Doris Garron: They have a soft spot for cats, especially those thrown away by others. These two ladies have been whirlwinds in the Feral Cat Coalition, sponsoring local events to spay and neuter feral cats and to find loving homes for them.
Steve Hummer: Working with youngsters is this man’s profession and hobby. He coaches baseball, football and wrestling for the Boys and Girls Club and is vice president of the club’s activity board. SHHS students benefit from his coordination of the Josai University (Japan) exchange program. He teaches social studies at SHHS, is an assistant wrestling coach and the school’s activity director, keeping his daily planner full.
Adele Hanscam: She loves to hunt and fish but this volunteer can mostly be found anywhere her two sons, Casey and Kyle, are and that’s usually somewhere with the Boy Scouts. She also helps with the Sportsman’s Holiday carnival, including climbing into a cold dunk tank last summer as a fund raiser. She also teaches Bible school at her church.
Lin Gagner: If something’s happening at St. Helen’s Catholic church it’s a good bet that Lin Gagner will be involved. She plays music, sings and serves as the church treasurer. Gagner supervises the hospitality section for the Oregon Jamboree and volunteers with the successful Habitat for Humanity program in the community. She has also participated in the Singing Christmas Tree and everything she does is done well.
Peggy Emmert: This SHHS graduate serves on the board of the Sweet Home Alumni Foundation, focusing on scholarships.She has helped with many Senior Alcohol Free Entertainment projects and is active in her church. Others say she is a “good, dependable worker everywhere.”
