Outdoor School funding falling short this year

Grant funding for the annual South Santiam STEWARDS Outdoor School Program has fallen short this year, and the South Santiam Watershed Council is seeking assistance in funding the program.

“We are reaching out to our community to ask for assistance funding this valuable program for our local sixth-graders, the high school counselors and their teachers,” said Watershed Council Education Coordinator Angela Clegg.

“Approximately 65 percent of students are economically disadvantaged in our school districts and are unable to attend without assistance. We need your help.”

The Outdoor School Program serves seven elementary schools in Lebanon and Sweet Home school districts. Students participate in two separate three-day, two-night programs at Camp Tadmor.

Outdoor School learning sessions include fire ecology, leave no trace, wildlife biology, fish biology, trees and forestry, aquatic ecology, orienteering, outdoor preparedness, nature art and archery. Students also participate in a variety of team-building activities with their learning groups, teachers and chaperons.

Clegg said she is seeking donations and volunteers. Donations are tax-deductible. Those making contribution will be recognized on the organization’s outreach brochures, website and social media sites.
