Pedestrian struck by SUV suffers serious injuries

A pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle last week remained at the Oregon Health Sciences University Monday morning.

Kenneth Pace, 61, of Sweet Home was seriously injured and taken to Samaritan Regional Medical Center before being transferred to OHSU.

Medics and police responded to the 600 block of Main Street at 5:10 p.m. on Dec. 7.

Herbert Sterner, 84, was westbound in a 2007 Saturn SUV in the left lane when his vehicle struck Pace, said Police Chief Bob Burford. Neither Sterner nor a passenger were injured.

The crash was serious, Burford said, and Pace possibly sustained life-threatening injuries. He was uncertain about Pace’s condition Monday.

The crash was in a poorly lit area between the Buzz’d coffee stand and Heritage Northwest real estate office, Burford said. The victim was wearing dark clothing, and the pavement was wet.

The initial investigation suggested that Pace was crossing the highway, but it wasn’t at a crosswalk, Burford said. “Based on the clothing and conditions, it would have been nearly impossible for him to be seen by the driver.”

The investigation remains open, Burford said. No one has been charged.
